Black Oak & Plywood Kitchen — Newton Street, Mount Maunganui

Black-stained Oak against old red brick, with raw Birch ply left showing at the edges. A kitchen that runs dark — lit like an electric dusk.

Black Oak kitchen with recycled brick splashback, island and pendants

On Newton Street, the joinery goes dark. Black-stained Oak with a fine vertical figure runs the full length of the kitchen, over benchtops of pale concrete-look stone and a splashback of red-orange recycled brick set behind glass. It reads closer to an industrial loft than anything light-filled and Scandinavian — dark and moody — and the joinery carries through the kitchen, laundry and bathroom vanity.

Two moves define the project. The first is a sliding timber panel wall that reads as a single graphic plane against the kitchen beyond — a signature joinery move, wall-sized and quiet. The second is the island: a custom piece on castors, black Oak drawer fronts inside a raw gunmetal steel frame, fine tab pulls, the wheels left in plain view. Furniture as much as fixture. Tan ribbed-leather stools pull up to it under matte black pendants lined with brass.

Up close, the build is left honest. Raw Birch plywood carcass edges are exposed on the floating bathroom vanity and the laundry doors — the laminations crisp against the black panels. At the sink, a coiled matte-black tap stands over an undermount bowl cut into the stone, with an integrated pop-up waste button in the benchtop. Small details, easy to miss — the kind you only notice when they’re done properly.

Then there is the light. A blue-violet LED washes the brick from above while warm strips run under the cabinetry below — a cool/warm split that gives the kitchen two temperatures at once. Warm Oak planks meet charcoal carpet tile at the floor. In the bedroom the register goes quieter still: a near-black feature wall, a white bed, a single sconce, the corridor beyond. The whole project holds a kind of electric dusk — dark surfaces, small warm lights, and joinery calm enough to carry both.
