Black Oak & Quartzite Kitchen — Oceanbeach Road, Mount Maunganui

Black Oak, pale grey-veined Quartzite and aged brass — from a curved fluted island to an ensuite where the shutters open to the Pacific.

Curved fluted black Oak island with cream bar stools and timber post

Black Oak against pale stone, on Oceanbeach Road at Mount Maunganui. One quiet palette runs from the kitchen through to a bar cabinet, a powder room and an ensuite, under soft coastal daylight throughout.

The kitchen is built around two moves. The first is the island: a fluted, curved base stained black, carrying a pale stone top whose long edge sweeps the eye into the room. The second is the range wall — a bookmatched Quartzite slab run full height as the splashback and continued across the rangehood cladding, so the stone reads as one field rather than a benchtop with something above it. Around them, tall black Oak cabinetry keeps the elevation symmetrical and still.

Up close, the Oak does most of the talking. The stain sits deep enough to darken the veneer without hiding it — pronounced cathedral grain still moves across the tall doors, interrupted only by slim matt black bar pulls. Where the fluted island base meets the benchtop, the junction is the detail: timber ribs stopping cleanly beneath a grey-veined stone edge.

The bathrooms change materials without changing register. Taupe Limestone-look tile and mosaic set the ground, with tapware and towel rails in aged brass and bronze. In the powder room, straight-grained timber veneer doors sit under a carved stone trough basin, alongside an aged brass gooseneck tap and an alabaster pendant. In the ensuite, a freestanding bath, and the Pacific framed in the shuttered window.

Around the joinery, the house softens everything — white walls, honey-toned solid timber posts and window trims, timber floors, soft coastal daylight. Beyond the island sits the lit bar cabinet, a warm point against the dark Oak. The cabinetry holds the dark notes. The light does the rest.
